What made you decide to get a fixed gear bike? Answer seriously and honestly
I got into it because every time I went to Davis to see my girlfriend we'd stop in front of the bike shops and I'd watch her get weak in the knees staring at the overly priced bikes in the windows...albeit, I did much of the same when we'd walk past the music shops and when she would take me to Guitar Center.
Long story short, I think it was her enthusiasm in talking about fixed gear bikes that made me curious about them and want to start riding me bike again.
Sorry, had to make a couple of changes in your little tirade.I think it's great that you ride for yourself and no one else's approval. But you seem to be seeking approval by posting a link to your blog in every post. When you put yourself out there for all to see, there are no guarentees that everyone who views it will have a positive reaction. There are always going to be haters on forums, but you have to consider the source and maturity level of the person before you get insulted. If someone doesn't like your bike, because of the way it looks there is nothing you can do about it.People don't like my bike because it has compact geometry, I don't give a fuck, especially when that person rides a conversion with a front Aerospoke.Tastes vary, really who gives a fuck?So what have we learned? If you don't want people to shit talk on your bike, don't post pictures of it.If you don't want people to shit talk on your blog, don't post links to it.Adding extra exclamation points, besides being something girls do, does not give it extra emphasis. It just shows why American schools are in such trouble.Oh and Jonathon, if you don't like this forum, you should delete your account. I won't take it personal so you should not either.

3 years ago before 75% of the people on here even knew what a fixed gear was or even knew what a velodrome was my cousin had two in his garage. he let me ride one so i went on ebay looked at some. saved up money, then went to his house in placentia a month or so after and rode in some park on the dirt going down hills. i thought they were retarded so i bought one and got faster than everyone i rode with.

A year and a half ago a friend's cousin came by with his single speed. *(for some reason he called it a Fixie.. maybe it had a flip flop hub or something and he didn't know any better.) I tried it out. I had never been on a road bike and liked how fast I could get up to speed and how smooth it road vs the ever present mentioned target/walmart bike that everyone is so familiar with. I also liked the simplicity of one gear for transport.
A while later I needed something for exercise besides running and lifting and decided to pick up a "fixie" bike. I answered an ad on craigslist for one and went to go check it out. Hopped on and to my surpise after immediately getting up to fast speed, couldn't stop pedaling. Surprised the shit out of me but at that point I understood what fixie... or fixed gear meant and was hooked in 10 seconds. Amazingly I didn't kill myself and was able to figure out how to stop quickly. That bike was a cheap suicide machine conversion. When I had problems mysteriously I couldn't get a hold of the kids that sold it to me. Lesson learned. This lead to my further love for these bikes because I used to work on cars and taking shit apart and putting together is addictive for me. Got a dui earlier in the year and now it's my primary transport. On my second build now with a track frame. Love this shit. It's like I've discovered something at 25 that I'm just as stoked on as I was on stuff when I was 15.
