General Education: Q & A
Anyone have any experience riding plastic saddles long distances? I notice plastic saddles popping up on some fixed gears(PK Ripper), but I can't imagine it being very comfortable. I like some of the looks of the plastic saddles but I don't want to purchase one if it's gonna be hurting my crotch on long distance rides.

Im assuming that they put a plastic saddle for people who want to do tricks. A plastic saddle wont tear and probably costs less to produce. They arent expensive so I would say to just buy one and give it a try.
There is one in the For Sale thread for $20.
Any suggestions on clipless pedals? I think I wanna use mountain pedals because of the float that they allow. Any problems with clipping out while holding skids?
if you want float you should get speedplays. otherwise spds are solid. i have speedplays and have never clipped out when skidding

The majority of pedals allow for some type of float. With the shimano road pedals it is adjusted by the cleat you use. With speedplay it is set with the X model and adjustable on the Zero model. It is always recommended to run road pedals, as the larger platform enables better power transfer and gives a more stable position when you are putting down large efforts. With all that being said, pedals are hugely up to a rider's preference. I personally hate speedplays, they give me hot spots and it feels like I am standing on nothing. I prefer a large platform, and chose shimanos spd-sl because the metal body on the pedals makes them ridiculously tough. Look Keo's use the same idea as the shimanos but use a composite or plastic body, which in the event of a crash can crack or grind away. Recently, Look has also been having problems with their spindles failing. Just remember, no matter what anyone says, it is different for every rider. The best advice is to try one of each, and see what works best for you.
I tried ronnie's setup, and it seems pretty solid. He runs shimano m520's, which is actually a mountain bike pedal. It is super easy to clip out, and I don't think I would clip out while trying to stop with those. Smiff, do you think that the power transfer would be better with the spd sl's?
You know how when u ride you can get a sweaty butt haha. And theres a sweat mark on your butt. Anyone know how to stop that from happening?
ok any other way i dont like to ride to hang out with friends in those
Cycling underwear/briefs/boxer briefs whatever. Basically like cycling shorts but not shorts and is more underwear.
black pants/shorts so u can't see the wet spot or cycling shorts ftw!

It most definitely will be.

If you skid strait, the mountain pedals will hold but if you whip skid they will eject. I had a pair and they would unclip at random times. Also, i was getting a hot spot. I switched to SPD-SL and there is no hot spot and it hasnt unclipped on me yet.
but, as Smiff said; it all depends on the rider and what they prefer.

so last night my plastic/synthetic toe strap broke and it prompts me to finally get my toeclip and strap upgrade going. im getting double straps so im wondering what the feel difference, and adv/disadvantages are when considering double gate or 4x gate clips.
any help would be great, thanks

What do you gain in getting a new bottom bracket? How does it change your ride and how well can you feel the difference, if any?
well, im here to answer my own question

it would seem that the biggest difference is in the way in your foot can adjust angularly, if that makes any sense. with 2 gates meeting in the center, one can kind of pivot their foot from the tip of the cage like / to | to \ . but with the mountain clip style, the way it wraps around the foot doesn't allow for that kind of freedom- but in terms of comfort it is more snug/secure because of the amount of surface area that can be pressed/strapped to the riders foot.
and yeah! thats what ive managed to find out from personal experience these few days
can you convert a rear road spinergy rev x to a front wheel?
cuz i got one and i need to know pm me.
GGNTJS, bottom bracket quality will depend on the brand and what type you buy. I'm assuming since you posted that you just bought a 2010 Motobecane Track in the just bought thread that that's what you will be riding. If you don't plan on changing cranks you will need a bottom bracket will a 103mm spindle length with a square taper. There are several brands that manufacture that size bb. The best would be a phil wood. Phil wood is know for its durability and quality. It will most definitely give you a smooth crank rotation and last the longest out of all the brands. But if you are looking for something more affordable go with a sugino bb. Its pretty good for the price and will be a step up from your current bb. But If you are going to upgrade your cranks, I would say go with a crankset that utilizes an external bb like the sram omiums or sram courier cranks. In this system the spindle is connected to the driveside of your cranks and attaches to your non driveside by tightening a bolt. The bb itself is a hollow tube made of plastic with two cups that screw into both sides. The cups sit on the outside of the bb shell of your bike. In my experience this is the smoothest crankset/bb combo on the market rite now and I highly suggest it.
