Don't bother converting that spinergy rev x, they are widely considered to be the weakest carbon wheels made. Just sell it and buy a better wheel that's not 10+ years old.

A hundred bucks tops. When I worked at Orange Cycle and someone would want to trade that bike in, we'd offer $50 for a trade, $25 outright. For $400 you could buy a brand new fixed gear bike, so save up some cash and do it right.

Just say no to drugs and conversions, neither one is good for you.

these questions are directed mainly at clutch since he seems to have a good amount of knowledge in this area but feel free to voice an opinion if you like.

what would it take to overheat or burn up a coaster brake? are there any decent quality coaster brake hubs out there that would work with road bike type rims?

As long as the hole count is the same, there will be no issues building up a coaster brake road wheel.

You can "smoke" or burn up a coaster brake. It not so much from sudden stops, but dragging the brake down a steep grade. The metal brake pads heat up from the friction cooking or burning up the grease inside the hub. The spring that pushes the pads out will brake or melt from the heat and the brake will not engage. In some cases the pads will cease and lock the brake up completely. Back when mountain bikes were nothing more than beach cruisers, this would happen all the time. It wasn't until the discovered Morrow coaster brake hub. But they haven't made them since the 50s, so I would recommend a Shimano coaster brake hub.

You probably won't be able to buy just the hub at most shops, because it's cheaper just to buy it built up as a wheel. So when you buy it it will say Shimano on the brake arm. If the shop tells you that a KT hub or any coaster brake is the same quality, leave!

You can get one at Orange Cycle for usually $50, but if the old man wants more for it offer him $50.
If he won't take $50 shop somewhere else.

Shimano is the only decent coaster brake currently being made. Everything else is junk especially Sturmy Archer.

what are different ways to carry tools around (examples: seat pouch, messenger bags, and such)
what brands are good and what are the benifits and flaws of different kinds?
i ride with a seat pouch but it doesnt fit my handpump or my 15

You listed the different ways in your post.

The best way is to experiment with different methods and see what suits you the best. Personally I don't like messenger bags because they are bulky, look pretentious. and have more space than I would need. I only carry a CO2 inflator.

Seat pouches are what old people use (atleast people older than me) and you still can't carry a pump. Well you could carry a crank brothers pump, but it will take a while to pump up a tire.

Utility belts seem to be all the rage since you can carry everything you need without hauling a cliche on your back.

There are so many options it would be impossible to list them all.

Or maybe kick it old school with one of these, atleast you could listen to tunes and hear people yelling:

"Hey get some gears!"

You need to find out what size your stem is, that way you can purchase risers that are the right size in diameter to fit your stem.

what is the benefit of having BMX style bars vs. the riser bars

-bryanisfixed

well this is just me but, risers are usually anywhere from a 1" rise to a 3" rise and thats too low for me. it makes my back hurt to be hunched over all the time, hench why i hate all bars except for bmx. my bmx bars have a 6" rise and im pretty much sitting up straight. i also cut them so they are narrower than normal. another pro/con (eye of the beholder) is increased wind drag, if you sit up straight. i like this on hills and such because i can control how much i want to spin or not spin just by sitting up or crouching down. i ride 48-19 so i tend to spin all the time and sitting up straighter helps me to breathe better. you can hold the crossbar if you want to be all "aero" and whatnot. also if your tricking it makes it way easier to grab the bars after you let go, just because there usually is more bar to grab and its closer to you. tricking also feels better with a more relaxed bar setup

What kind of inserts are good for road shoes?  I've got high arches and I could use some recommendations.  The Sworks road shoes come w/ the red foot bed inserts and according to the Specialized website red inserts were designed for flat feet.

Get the green inserts or try the blue ones. The reason the shoes come with the red low arches is so that when you try them on, the footbeds won't feel initially offensive. Ride over to Rock N Road and talk  to Matt.

would formula be considered entry level?

-kennytrippinn

Formula hubs come laced to many pre built wheelsets and in varying price ranges, from budget to mid range.

I've ridden on my wheels (Formula hubs/AlexR500/NoNameSpokes) for thousands of miles and they haven't given me any problems.  For "entry level"...I wouldn't mind running another set of Formula hubs on my next wheels.
