I see alot of you run Deep V wheels. I was wondering what improvements you get running Deep Vs vs a regular rim?

Postives:
Style.

Negatives:
-Higher surface area for crosswinds
-Additional weight
-Higher rolling mass

If your deep v isn't deep than 60mm, you won't reap much of an aerodynamic benefit anyway. Velocity Deep V's run at 30mm.

I think this is right. Anyone have any other opinions?

I think you actually get an aerodynamic advantage once you go deeper than 40mm which still means they don't give you anything. Also most people are running velocity deep v's which are strong but heavier and typically laced to o.k. hubs. If you are looking for a daily commuter wheelset deep v's work well and you have a choice of colors(YAY!!)

straight up. deep v's are shitty rims and people run them because every one does and they ARE DEEP!

i own them and they are fine for the street. heavy as fuck.

if you want nice rims just get mavic open pros. way nicer than deep v's and not as heavy

agreed (with everyone). these rims aren't special. they look nice, everyone has them, and they are pretty solid. i guess they are your staple for everyday commuters, or trick wheels.

i just got velo deep v's cause everyone else had them (yes i am a sheep)

but i wish i knew more about rims / someone to help me out but i only really went by what others said...
alot recc. me just to go towards the deep v's

overall they're not bad when laced to a okay / good hub and you do have a great amount of colors.
but most importantly you're better off buying them used than newly made in shops.

I have Weinman DeepV's and they are solid. Ive been riding mine for about a year and a half and they are still fairly true (and I ride the shitty streets of Long Beach). Pros: Cheeper, solid wheel... Cons: paint faded on my wheel, spokes arent as strong as velocitys.

Also, From what I understand the only advantages to Deep V's is strength and looks. When I say strength I mean best strength for the cheapest price.

its kinda weird people are more into rims than hubs. deep v's for looks, but garbage hubs...is like a body kit on a corolla.

deep v's are easy. knowing your box rims = baller. listen to detox. find yourself some open pro's and get into nicer hubs.

also +1 on rolling mass. i'd rather have a heavy hub than a heavy rim. if 2 wheels weigh the same (light rim heavy hub vs.  deep v light hub) at speed, the heavy hub has less effective rolling resistance than a deep v.

physics, get into it.

I'm a heavier rider and I pound the shit out of my deep V's and they take it like the insatiable Australian whores that they are!
The benefit of a deep dished rim over a box rim is a shorter spokelength which theoretically makes the rim less likely to fall out oftrue and a more rigid rim that is resiliant to ovalization i.e. "hops"
I've ridden Weinmanns and they are pretty comparable to Deep V's butnot as strong. I've got cxp 22's on my commuter laced to shimano deorehubs and can honestly say there's no way the 22's could hold up to thepunishment my velocitys take.
Consider how you ride and how fucking fat you are when purchasing wheels; some 120 lb kid talking about j hopping the fuck out'a Weinmanns isn't going to have the same story to tell as your average 180 lb rider that put a permanent hop in his rear wheel by going down a curb or hitting a pot hole.

Any wheel is going to suck if it's not built properly. I've seen 20 year old rims that were straight as an arrow because the builder knew what he was doing. I would bet that any brand new wheel coming out of a factory needs to be gone over before being used. Of course you can ride them right away if you want but they'll last much longer with less maintenance with a little work up front.

mo rim= mo stiff

shorter spokes don't flex as easily which results in a stiffer wheel and anyone in the know knows that stiff=fast

that applies to any parts, any parts at all because if a part flexes when you pedal energy is being put into making that flex rather than going towards making your wheel spin

so, the lesson for today, stiff shit=faster and more efficient riding

so go buy really deep rims and go faster
