High spoke counts or low? I can see how more spokes add both wind resistance and weight, and how that weight as a moving part counts even further against pedal force. It would follow that lower spoke counts then are more aerodynamic in that they reduce all these drag coefficients; however, one must bring into question that once the wheel is itself already moving would more spokes create a more blade-shaped wheel that would be able to cut more air out of its way once in motion?

Anyone have any proof/knowledgeability about this?

Fewer spokes would allow for less drag from forward motion but in order to compensate for less support, the remaining spokes must be larger in size. This however creates a problem when riding in the streets: cross winds are killer. If ridden in a closed environment where cross winds aren't really a factor, then it's good to have fewer spokes even up to the point of having a disc.

But on the question of what's more aero: my bent Mavic rim :]

Fewer spoke count will have less drag, but compensation comes from the rims, not the spokes. As an illustration, consider a 16 paired spoke wheel. Because of the less spokes, there's less drag, but because the spokes are paired, there has to be a lot of tension in that one spot. Not to mention, the rim has to be stronger in between spokes so that it won't bend. Another problem with fewer spoke count would be the probability of a spoke breaking. In that case, it could be disasterous. A good example of this would be the Rolf Vector Sport wheel. However, if they're radial, 1x, 2x, and so forth, the wheel can be lightened since strength isn't being sacrificed. honestly, there's very little we'll feel in difference of spoke count riding around town.

Oh yeah, another mention: if you got the money, it doesn't matter on weight.

With tall rims, fat bladed wheels, fat chainring, 150 pound person, I don't thing 28, 32, 36 spokes matter in the street to much. Drome racing yes, not street.

honestly, on the street, you dont really get fast enough under the perfect wind conditions for the aero factor to be noticable. just go for what's not going to break

no no no no no no no no no guys. im not asking this so i can upgrade my sw33t fuxxie. dont go assuming im going to be. i noticed that a 36spoke wheel looks a lot more like a disc wheel than one with 16 or 18 or 20, and the question sprung from there. it's either going to be more aero, less aero, or about the same. wind tunnel kinda deal. im not asking about "on the street" and i dont know what made alls yalls bring it up, it might be relevant to you, but it doesnt answer anything so if ya gotta bring it up again go start an "in the street" thread.

just get cardboard and tape it to the spokes to make a disc wheel so aero bro
also attach some to the headtube to make an aero headtube like the leader frames
you'll certainly shave off some nanoseconds from your runs to the lab and coffee shop broooo

and that's one damn good-lookin ride too

sorry, kindof assumed you were talking about street. i think the logic behind it is there's more resistance every time something cuts through the air, so the more spokes, the more resistance, cus it's that many more objects having to slice through.

both the lab and coffee shop go under "in the street" aka elsewhere. im not asking you what to do with any extra cardboard i might have either. further, im not asking you to make more bullshit posts trying to redeem yourself. you have something to say or you dont, from the looks of it you dont, so can it. please.

+1 on the more spokes more resistance thing. looking at it another way, just imagine if you were blowing air through the bristles of a hair brush, the less bristles, the faster the air gets through with less disruption to it's flow

Less spokes and if you want to be aero run bladed spokes, if you wanna go really fast... ride more.

NOT ABOUT GOING FAST FOP

but then take into consideration ... to those of you who lack uncommon knowledge you would then assume that your bro-dozer gets better gas mileage with the tail gate down but in reality the recirculation and the pocket of air that the tail gate provides when it is up. in fact makes the truck more aero so if more spokes means a solid pocket of air. then depending on how fast the wheel is spinning could mean more aero

i vote at the same top speed and a wind tunnel more spokes is more aero but for all we know they are the same ...

if you ride your bike on the street, stopping at stoplights. who cares spokes arent gonna make that big of a difference

as stated before if you read the whole thread (t-rev got pretty angry about this)

IT IS NOT ABOUT THE STREET ITS ABOUT WHICH IS MORE AERO

ITS ABOUT WIND TUNNELS
