im rocking 48x16 but I want to either do 48x18 or 46x16
what do you think is better for all around riding

48X16 is better. If you drop your ratio too low, youll be slow.

I like the way it feels but I dont want to have one skid patch, I figured I can either buy a cog or a new chainring

48X14 its decent. Thinking about changing to 48X16, or one similar that will give me more skid patches.

well a 48/16 wont give you more skid patches so that one would be out of question. 48/16 = 1 skid patch :/
just go to 48/15 if you want your ratio to be slightly easier

The chart shows the gear inches and skid patches. Great tool to use when thinking about what gearing to get.

is your wife petite?
if shes running a 44t chainring in front you can accompany that with a 16t cog maybe a 17t cog to be a little easier
